I think there is nothing like Mt. Rainier in the lower 48 states and you should try for it. If you can't get a 'traditional' Wonderland Trail permit, you can get a permit to hike for a week somewhere in the park that may include parts of the Wonderland Trail and be just as amazing. If you get skunked, which I don't think will happen, there's always, Goat Rocks Wilderness, or Glacier Peak Wilderness, or many other great places to see. I've never been disappointed flying to Washington for hiking trips.
August is also my favorite time to hike the Sierra Nevada, and there's also nothing like it in the lower 48 states.
