So...because of a computer issue, wonderland trail permits will only be issued on a first come first serve (walk up) basis. Not sure Im willing to risk flying from the east coast to Washington and not get a permit.
So.............looking for suggestions for a 7 day back packing trip in lower 48 (and Alaska). In good shape....better than average experience. Best time for me is August to November.
any thoughts?

There are plenty of National Forests that require no permits, no reservations and no fees. Head to your local library and pick up a few books like this one. I notice this is your first post. Welcome to the nut house!

There are a lot of 7-day trips out there. Some of my favorites have been in various locations in the Sierra, in the Wind River Mtns., and in the Sawtooths (Idaho).

There are several great weeklong trails around here. Several members have extensive experience in the Winds. I know the Tetons, Gros Ventre, and my beloved Southern Absaroka pretty well. There are a couple of guys who do some awesome !@#$ in the Northernmost Tetons. Hopefully Robin Hood or KC Wins can chime in there. If you're solo hiking the Absarokaow might not be a good choice, but if not let me know. How about a Teton Classic? picture uploader

Don't always look for loops, out and backs give you two different views anyway. Along US 395 in California from Lone Pine north as far you want to escape to, there are trailheads that take you over the Southern and mid Sierra almost at every town or wide spot along the way. All are in a wilderness area so you need a wilderness overnight permit from the Ranger station in control of the area. Bishop is a good guess for the southern Sierra. Lone Pine, Horseshoe Meadows to Cottonwood Lakes over Army Pass catch the PCT south for aways then loop back to Horseshoe via Chicken Springs lake over to Cottenwood Pass. You can walk up a sandy make your own trail to top of Mt Langley at just over 14,000. If you go north on PCT in 5 days you will get to Kearsarge Pass trail. mapper.acme.com/?ll=36.47203,-118.18113&z=13&t=T Horse Shoe Meadows, Cottonwood Lakes, New Army Pass Independence, Onion Valley/Shepherd Pass trail heads In one and out the other. Park car at one trail head and catch a hitch up/down the hill to dirt 3 mi road to/from Shepherd Pass Trail. mapper.acme.com/?ll=36.71067,-118.28869&z=14&t=T Shepherd Pass trail head at Symmes Creek mapper.acme.com/?ll=36.66628,-118.38319&z=14&t=T Shepherd pass and High Sierra mapper.acme.com/?ll=36.69829,-118.36156&z=14&t=T North over Forester Pass mapper.acme.com/?ll=36.75972,-118.36920&z=14&t=T North to Vidette Meadows and east over Kearsarge to parking lot Bishop, South Lake trailhead to Bishop Pass, into Dusy Basin, then figure your way to the south over Knapsack Pass or west down to then back up over Piute Pass to North Lake and catch a ride to South Lake. Parson's camp (mile back from South Lake) will do it for a fee. OR go up Piute Pass from North Lake and spend time in Humphrey area. mapper.acme.com/?ll=37.13363,-118.54669&z=14&t=T South Lake - Bishop Pass mapper.acme.com/?ll=37.09208,-118.55124&z=15&t=T Dusy Basin mapper.acme.com/?ll=37.08582,-118.58034&z=15&t=T La Conte Ranger station then north mapper.acme.com/?ll=37.22786,-118.64840&z=14&t=T North lake to Piute Pass mapper.acme.com/?ll=37.25266,-118.71020&z=14&t=T Humphreys Basin *Note: You will have to cut and paste the links.

There are some nice places to wander in the Yukon (Kluane, Tombstone, and Ivvavik come to mind). Or throughout BC and Alberta (Banff, Jasper, Pacific Rim, Strathcona). Or perhaps out on the East Coast (Gros Morne, Torngat). Or further north (Pingualuit, Auyuittuq)?

Another option would be to fly to WA and try to get a permit for the Wonderland Trail. You might get one.
If not, then make sure you have a backup plan. Plenty of other options in the Olympics and Cascades.

If I had 7 days to spend somewhere in the lower 48 in August or September I would go to either the Winds, the Winds, or the Winds. If you get into October or November, of course, your options will be more limited. In October I'd go to the Pecos, November the Gila.
Did I mention that you should go to the Winds?

Thank you everyone! Youve been extremely helpful.....obviously I have lots of options.
Will keep you posted. Looks like there is a section for a trip report. I'll be sure to include one.
again, thank you!
