The Gunsight Canyon Gang Two-thousand six, ten years ago this week, Jonathon Dorn along with a couple of other Backpacker Magazine editors, asked a few forum participants to hang out and join them on a plant survey of Gunsight Canyon. Lake Powell had been dropping in elevation for several years and lower parts of the canyon had become exposed. I’m guessing 10 to 15 people were at the base camp on the rim throughout the event. One of those folks was 4WheelBob. I think we all took this advantage to hear a wilderness travel perspective none of us have had to consider. 4WheelBobThis adventure included my first ever rappel and hike down a canyon. I would have never considered doing such a hike if it hadn’t been for the folks at Backpacker. desert dweller's first rappel Upper Gunsight CanyonWe spent the last night in the canyon and hiked up and out to the rim where some of the camp mates set up a rim car camp over looking the Lake Powell. We made a community dinner and hung out around the fire. Hiking out of the CanyonNavajo Mountain

Congrats on the tenth anniversary of your first abseil. Looks like a helluva a place to do it. For all of its simplicity, abseiling is one of my favorite roping activities. My first was out of a tree.
Looks like a great place for hiking and camping. And the company doesn't look too awful either!
:-P

That looks excellent. Thanks for the report, and I'm glad you have such fond memories of a fine looking place and quality company. Being a "dope on a rope" (a catch phrase from my last employer) is fun. Being with experienced climbers and rappel masters helps to open up terrain you might not otherwise access. Good on you for taking the opportunity. Not to get too weird, but I think I need to throw a poster of 4wheelbob on the wall of my den. He's my new hero. Sir, you simply motivate me!

Good on you for taking the opportunity. Fond memories, for sure. So far, I've done exactly Zero rappels/abseils since then. Being primarily a trail hiker, it's just not my thing. It was fun, though, and I can understand the passion many have for going up and down steep cliffs dangling from rope and gear.

Jonathon Dorn, along with a couple of other Backpacker Magazine editors... Things have changed, huh! But thanks for the recollection.

This was one of our favorite trips ever! Great people, giant jackrabbits, flying tents, and the editorial staff rolling out the issue with their first article about White Mountain. Better yet were the stories, the humor, the camaraderie. Most memorable? Editor Dorn driving out to catch a plane in Vegas, and blowing 2 tires on a desert rock sheet. Gina and I still talk about it.
