Hey backpacker friends, we are looking to borrow a pair of cross country skis and boots size 10 or thereabouts for our upcoming Greenland trip - April 18th through May 20th. One of our projects requires us to either walk or (hopefully) cross country ski away from camp. We can't use the snowmobiles because we need a completely clean area.
If you happen to have a pair we can borrow, we would greatly appreciate it.

I'd think snowshoes might be more air and ground transportable: and not require special boots...?
A little slower but less breakable overall.

Our boots perform just fine on the surface. The reason for them is that it's for a bit speedier travel than walking.

Isn't there an REI near one of you? As their Rental season is ending, maybe they'd allow you to borrow a set with boots that actually fit.

LW, that's a very (very!) generous offer. I think that would fit the needs quite well. The boot size is likely a bit big but I can pick up a pair of boots here on clearance (end of season) that might fit better. What bindings do they use?
We'll use them to survey snow, measuring spectral albedo over hundreds of points in square grids to compare directly with satellite measurements overhead. Each satellite pixel requires about 20-30 km distance surveying on the ground, making the skis helpful. As Darren noted, we'd do it with snowmobiles but the 2-stroke exhaust actually dirties the snow enough (in the IR wavelengths especially) to change the measurements slightly, so we're avoiding that if possible.
I'll PM you, see what the best way to get them. Again, thank you for the offer.

One of the great things about this forum is the generosity that is displayed by various members time and time again. I've experienced it personally and seen lots of it around here. You guys are really great.

They have a bar at the toe rather than pins but I couldn't tell you offhand which type of bar. I'll need to look at them.
