I'm about half way there... I'll retire at age 57 with 33 years in. I look forward to being a volunteer at some National Park at that point, or parks as I'd like to get an RV and travel. Or I can still work fires as an AD employee, if I need some excitement or road trip money.

Other stuff helps too--like driving a car until you've saved enough to buy the next with cash, so we don't have payments (yes, we drove some real wrecks in the early years. Ask me about a '72 Hornet). The fact that I hate to shop is probably helpful too I had a '72 Hornet; I know exactly what you mean!

We have been self employed and doubt we will ever really retire as we invested our "retirement" into rentals. It will feel like retirement going down to 30-40 hr weeks! Lol. There will always be maintenance and bookkeeping on them as we only have "nice" houses. Aka: we completely scrub and redo after each tenant. But, in 5 years we will own 6 rentals as much as you can in US there by financing our hiking. The youngest will be 18 in 9 years and she will join us traveling when she doesn't have to go visit mom I can't wait to say adios to 65-70 hr weeks!

Ha! Mine had a radio, though I'm not sure it worked. And the car had power, when it ran at all.
