That's not my normal look! Yeah, I don't remember pink hair from when I met you. Actually, you can't prove by me that that's you at all.

I retired in 2003. I had a great job and colleagues but also had a long list of other things I wanted to do while I was still able and doing them was more important to me than earning more money to buy things I didn't need. I've kept busy, enjoyed myself, and have no regrets.
But that's not true of everyone. Several of my former colleagues retired in the years before I did. And two of them were back before I retired. They got bored. I remember asking one of them why he had come back to work and he replied "There's only so much traveling one can do."

"There's only so much traveling one can do." I think that suggests a lack of imagination My BiL retired at age 38. He (and his wife, who retired soon after, unretired for a few years after the market crashed, and has re-retired) never seems to run out of places to travel. Or the willingness to go do more of it. But he's got stuff to keep him engaged between trips, too. That does seem to me to be key.

I agree with rebeccad. Even if I started today, I probably wouldn't have enough time left to get to everywhere I'd like to see in the Southwest, not to mention the Northern Rockies, the Sierra, or the Pacific Northwest. (However, I have pretty much used up all the fun in NJ).

I have pretty much used up all the fun in NJ I'm pretty sure you did that in the first 15 minutes. As an old boyfriend noted (when he had been visiting his old home in NJ), the place really needs a giant inflatable volcano.

As an old boyfriend noted (when he had been visiting his old home in NJ), the place really needs a giant inflatable volcano. New Jersey actually does have a volcano, and a pretty unusual one at that. It's a carbonatite volcano, only one of which has erupted anywhere in the world in recorded history. Unfortunately, the current owners blocked access to visitors after building the house at the apex. It's shown in the picture on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rutan_Hill . Unfortunately it was one of those things I thought I'd always get around to, so I didn't see it when there was still public access. It's only about 20 minutes away, and until about 10 years ago it was a cow pasture. www.atlasobscura.com/places/new-jersey-s-own-volcano(Carbonatite volcanos: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbonatite)

Ankle deep in sugar sand is some tough slogging. At least there are no hills.

Eating out can really eat into one's frugality. We seldom do (not at all last month, aside from a milkshake on our way home from the desert), and when we do, especially if it's the whole family, one meal can equal 10% of the month's groceries. We've chosen to largely emulate my FiL's very successful approach: live frugally most of the time, but when something will really make a difference (like a trip to Peru), then do it, and do it right. I think we get more out of big experiences than eating out once a week or something.

Yeah Rebecca that was my dad's plan, too. It became ours. But all of the parents did say get out and do stuff while you can. Good advice...glad that we started on that early because places have really changed over the years.

Good advice...glad that we started on that early because places have really changed over the years. Exactly--we've been doing stuff, but we don't do much that's expensive (and yes, I consider dining out expensive, at least by comparison with cooking) unless they have payoff. Which mostly means travel, though my spouse seems to be able to justify keeping the computers pretty up to date (and there's some validity in that for his computer, which he uses a lot for work. Mine, not so much. I mostly crunch words). But that also means buying a meal out when that's what will put the right cap on the day (or when otherwise I will become homicidal through want of a meal). Other stuff helps too--like driving a car until you've saved enough to buy the next with cash, so we don't have payments (yes, we drove some real wrecks in the early years. Ask me about a '72 Hornet). The fact that I hate to shop is probably helpful too
