Ok,
I finally broke down and bought a new tent, (not needed), from SAC and got the BA. Not all that much lighter than my SD Vaporlight 2..which is going on 7yrs old...but ..what the heck.....It got great reviews, packs super small..etc etc. Plus I have never been really satisfied with the way I pack hubbed poles since I sold my basic dome tent w/straight poles.
My hiking partner googled it and said...great...but what happens when you need your trekking poles the next day?
See, we typically do not do loops...we'll hike in somewhere near or at water for 2-3 days and explore from there...a base camp 5-8 miles from trailhead. Bushwhack...climb a nearby mtn...
Hate to admit it but he has a point.
Don't want to drop the tent on top of my stuff for the day and while the ADK's are not about to run out of limbs I don't think it is a good idea to rely on that..
So....any thoughts?

I drop the tent and place a big rock on top of it, to keep it from blowing away. (I put a sit pad under the rock.) No big deal. Still don't want to do that? Try tying off the high points to trees.

Hi Zeke,
Are you the Ol'Zeke from the old boards?
The tie off seems easiest, but I'm not worried about it blowing away..rather if it rains I have to re-erect a puddle laden tent.

Are you the Ol'Zeke from the old boards? Yes. This time I registered before Zeke was taken already. I was Ol'Zeke because I was older than the person who took Zeke in the last iteration.
Glad to see you, even under a new name.

I know tarptent sells light poles so you fm don't have to use your hiking poles.

Buy or make basic poles. I've bought aluminum pole sections from Quest. Cheaper than you think and quite light. I don't bother shock cording the sections -- save the weight and also gives you the flexibility of using the sections separately if you need a strut or prop something up. www.questoutfitters.com/tent_poles.htm#TENT POLES If you want to go as light as possible, Fibraplex is a good source for carbon fiber poles. You can buy parts or they also have premade ones at basic lengths. Super light, so minimal weight penalty. fibraplex.com/index.php/store/

You can get a 45" 2oz pole (shock corded) from Tarptent for $8, ( so $16 for 2)plus postage. (under Extras) They can be cut with a hack saw or Dremel but I don't think the extra 2" will make much difference at all. (they bend) franco@tarptent
