Seems like it would have been easier and less stressful to sedate the cougar. For a minute there I thought the cougar would rip his foot off. Stupid traps.

Woodsie, it is very difficult to sedate big cats, because the sedative depends on knowing the weight of the cat. Researchers have killed big cats while trying to sedate them for collaring. Too much sedative will do that. Too little will leave them groggy and terrified. That makes for a more dangerous patient.

From what I read in the post comments from what I think was the original posting the trapper was setting up bob cat traps for whatever reason. I think he was the one helping the ranger.
I've never liked traps like these either and I hate to think about an animal suffering in one. The fact that these guys put their own well being on the line to free this cat is what I'm most appreciative of.
