Also, this apparently allows you to send GPS tracking information via Satellite as well. Anyone used this service yet?

I used it for a month in South America. It gave my wife peace of mind to see me move each day - they have an app which you can download at home to watch your friends move. If I was going to stay in the same place for a few days I'd send a short message saying so. Allowable message length is short, like twitter, but enough to convey info. There are different plans you can buy (# messages, etc.), and then cancel when you get back. It has a global SAR button, which I hope to never use.
I got it because it works pretty much everywhere in the world except very near the poles. If you're going to stay in the U.S. there may be less expensive options which will suffice, but check coverage and communications requirements - most require a clear view of the sky, although they'll keep trying if block by heavy tree cover. A lot depends on what sort of network they communicate with.

I think Garmin may also have had an eye on Delorme's mapping software.

We ditched our gps when Delorme came out with the InReach Explorer. It's fantastic if you hike in areas with no cell phone service ... which is the bulk of the areas we backpack in. The GPS component of the InReach is fairly good ... so no complaints about that part of the device. The ability to text is very handy ... especially when confirming a bush plane pickup time on a week long trip (nice not having to pack up camp if the plane is going to be delayed a day because of weather on their end). Of course the ability to SOS is nice to have also - if ever needed. Monthly subscription cost is a drag, but we don't bother with a cell phone - so it's not like we're doubling up on communication costs.
