I've been catching up on projects most of the day and needed a break. So I walked outside, away from any lights, and looked up into the dark sky sprinkled with stars, constellations, and a planet or two. Everything was pretty much the way I left it.
With each passing minute I remembered those times on a night hike or sitting outside my tent. The night sky is pretty much the same. And the angels of solitude and serenity sat or stood with me gazing up into the night sky. So after a few minutes I walked back inside. It was like a 5-minute backpacking trip, and I feel better.
Yeah, I know, it was an awfully short trip but sure a nice break. Anyone have similar means for a quick trip to wilderness memories? Trees in the backyard? Coyotes howling on the breeze? Birds flitting from tree to tree? A refreshing breeze? What works for you?

I've got a gurgling water feature in the front yard. I like to sit on my front porch, watch the stars and listen to the water splashing down the rocks.

Nice. I went on a bike fifteen mile bike ride for the first time in about three months today. Same general result.
Outside is good for you.

It's a half mile from my door to the cliffs above the ocean, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. I get a bit of that mini-backpack outing every time I go run there. I stop a lot and just watch the surf, and the hawks. Once I saw a fox over there It's pretty well worn ground, but the ocean is never worn out.

We live far enough east of Denver to view dark skies. We hear Coyotes nearly every night in the summer when the windows are open.

I spend a lot of time on my back porch in the summer at night. My husband is a TV junkie, and I am not, so sitting outside is my way to unwind or recharge. I love the sounds of the bugs and frogs. Occasionally I'll hear a whippoorwill or owl. It's quite pleasant.

Everything was pretty much the way I left it. Yeah, it's wonderful the way it is, don't change a thing. Lately, I've been streaming the old Friends and Cheers shows. I can't get enough educational tv. Just kidding. We live in a dark sky area, but it's very cloudy these days. Today and tonight look promising for a clear sky. I love watching the fog roll in and out of the little valley and up and down the hillsides. For the most part it settles on the north side of the hill south of our house or in the neighbor's meadow, but not on our property, which surprises me because we have a large pond and some wetlands. The fog will pile up against the hill and sometimes a breeze coming from the west will ricochet upward and form the fog into a vortex that rises above the ridge where it spreads out again. The breeze moves on leaving the fog to either settle back onto the hill or dissipate. It is very graceful and beautiful. Some day I'll capture it on video, it happens within minutes. I don't have to leave the property to be entertained, but I try to get into town once or twice a week for some face time with humans, besides my wife.

We have a beautiful city park just a block from my house. It's quite large and while it's not the backcountry, I always enjoy walking my dog in it which I do nearly every day. We also have a large undeveloped park along the river which is great for walking the dog. It's only a 10 minute drive and once you're int it, you're completely isolated from the city. We go there a lot.

Too much light pollution to enjoy the sky at night. When I need a quick break I can be either at a small park with a trail in 5 minutes or at night I can go stroll through some farm fields nearby.

I put a towel down on the grass in the backyard and watch the sky -- airplanes, trees swaying, stars at night. Listen to the birds and cicadas. I spent every day out there last summer after my dog had knee surgery and was on restriction. The cat joined us sometimes ... as did the chiggers and the fire ants.

I can go out and listen to the coyotes just about any night while stargazing. Love to hear them. Rarely see them, but that's ok.

So I walked outside, away from any lights, and looked up into the dark sky sprinkled with stars, constellations, and a planet or two. Everything was pretty much the way I left it. I do this most evenings. Before I go to bed I go out into the back yard and call the dogs in for the night and just stand there and soak it all in for a while. If the coyotes are howling my lab mix will growl and paw the ground like she wants to take them on.

A 5 minute walk and I am in privately owned timberlands with gated roads. Hop over the gate and walk away from the roads. It is like solo off trail.
Or I will throw my mountain bike over the gates and ride the road system all day without seeing another soul. Meadows, old growth, creeks with fish, finally crest the ridge and see town below me and forested peaks all the way to the horizon. There is a reason I chose to move here 37 years ago and stayed.
