Goodbye to my ownerYou may have to click a few links to get to the end. It was linked to by a friend, but my wife and I have been there once already, and our current dog is blind at the tender young age of about 5.

Losing a pet is never easy. We lost one a few years ago. We've got two now, but I hope they live a long life.

The Rainbow Bridge Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

My last one (in my avatar) was my constant companion from the day she was born to the day she died at almost 17. On her last day she was still happy and cheerful but wouldn't eat and hadn't in 4 days so I knew it was time. Coming up on 3 years now and I still cry when I think about her.

One of my coworkers just had to put her dog down due to old age and some complications due to old age. My coworker is hurting at the moment and it's tough to deal with since only time will help now. I don't know if this has been shared here but if you have a few minutes of time this little movie called Denali is a beautiful tribute to both a dog and it's owner. vimeo.com/122375452

On her last day she was still happy and cheerful but wouldn't eat and hadn't in 4 days so I knew it was time. Coming up on 3 years now and I still cry when I think about her. Only been about year here. She was 14. Been here longer than some of my kids, y'know? Hardest part was that the goodbye didn't happen...she went out for her evening usual and wandered off. Never found her.

And here's the article that goes with the Denali video. Last lines..."Everything you do for a dog to help them age well, you should do with them." So eat the best food you can afford. Go for a walk, even if it's raining. Take a lot of naps. Keep your teeth clean and your breath fresh, so that the people you lick will not flinch. And when someone you love walks in through the door, even if it happens five times a day, go totally insane with joy.
