Jack English had a cabin in one of the most beautiful locations in the Ventana Wilderness (a.k.a Big Sur). He was friendly to backpackers; a hero to a few. I had the honor of meeting him in 2012. He passed on March 3. Jack English Obituary
The location of his cabin in Pine Valley is a worthy hiking destination if you are in the area.

I've read thru the news blurbs and bios and can't believe the Tent Police and govt honchos didn't raid his cabin, tear it down and kick him off the land. It's usually something the forest cops like to do. He must've slipped under the radar, or maybe his cabin wasn't actually inside a designated wilderness area? Usually the tent police and rangers have so many intricate rules that they go wild when they find similar individuals trying to live like actual outdoorsmen. I wonder if Mr English ever kept a journal? An online journal? Ha ha ha. But god bless him. He reminds me of old Norman Clyde, the mountaineer who routinely carried 90 lb packs and roamed the Sierras. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_ClydeHere's a neat vid on English---

Thanks Tipi. I hadn't seen that.
Jack's cabin is on an inholding, and he bought it after the wilderness was established. He apparently got along well with the forest service, at least the firefighters. They enjoyed landing helicopters at his place and sometimes brought supplies.
I'm a big fan of Norman Clyde. His young climbing friends (Rowell, Dawson, Eichorn) would give him a hard time about the amount of stuff he carried, which often included wooden boxes and a rifle.

“He went to a place that filtered the people who came there,” he said. “It just sort of automatically happened that in Pine Valley, the trail is a filter to people. And people that don’t matter, that don’t care about anything real, they never go there.” That's probably my favorite thing about backpacking...

Wish I had an inholding in a Wilderness Area. I would donate it back in my will.
