That was probably either Ray Estrella (good guy), or the poser who always turned down Ray's invitations to go camping - I think that was NatureBoy.

Didn't Backpacker magazine forums begin about 1998? Pretty close to that timeline for the BP forum c. 1998 with revisions 2002 and 2015. For the first go many, including myself came over from ...darn it....can't think of name. Debra would know.

That was probably either Ray Estrella (good guy) While that name sounds familiar I did some googling and found who I was speaking of. He went by the name LandNavMan.

Ray was a very prolific poster at Backpakers, known to me (apart from exchanging a tent with him) for his many tent reviews as well as for challenging trolls. I miss him...

He went by the name LandNavMan. I'm not certain LandNavMan was Ray. LNM was the guy who would organize month long bushwhacking trips.

Ray Estrella and LandNavMan are two different people. LandNavMan's first name was Michael. He was a rescuer in the Upper Peninsula who helped organize group expeditions in that area. He was a knowledgeable guy who formatted his posts with headlines, font size and block quotes but didn't post very often. Nice guy who was enthusiastic about the possibility of mountain lions returning to that area.

There is a rayestrella registered with no posts, I used to read his gear reviews way back in the old, old Forums before I ever participated. I'm assiming it's the same guy.

Coolkat , LandNavMan is Michael A. Neiger. His website is called Rucksack or Google Michigan Bush Rats. There is a photo of him there and both name and moniker of LandNavMan. His link to Backpacker forums is still the Ikonboard address, which is about when I recall him last posting. Incidentally, that link now redirects to this website, though he has not yet signed up under the moniker LandNavMan.

It's interesting looking back on how much I learned from so many different members. An online community can add a lot to one's life. Gotta agree. I'm looking forward to seeing some people in Denver - BlueBear, hopefully Deborah, and anybody else -next month when I travel there for business. BlueBear took me on a wonderful hike in the Flat Irons many years ago and it's just fun catching up with him over dinner.

Was Mel ever on this forum? She was a big wheel at the backpacker.com. She passed away a few years ago.

I was thinking about 4wheelBob yesterday while talking with my b-i-l about the Bishop area and White Mountain. 4wheelBob climbed that 14,000+ ft mountain in 2007...in his wheelchair, if you don't know. I'm trying to track him down to invite him back to the forum.
