Is there someplace besides eBay to find used bear canisters?

They occasionally turn up on the Gear Swap forum at Backpackinglight.

I think they were free at South Lake Tahoe NFS station.

I have a question, do bear canisters work by keeping the bear out or by eliminating the smell of what's in it?
Just wondering if I pick up a used one do I need to check the seal or anything?

They can smell it, they just can't get in it.

Just wondering if I pick up a used one do I need to check the seal or anything? The seal is probably most useful to keep moisture out. My Bearikade has one.

Plus they use their eyes (they spot hanging food caches in moments): anecdotes are around that bears accustomed to the futility of canisters bear off from campsites after spotting the canister. Any seal is a water resistant gesture, something the original Garcia lacks. As I ziplock everything I've never thought about it.

They can smell it, they just can't get in it. Unless they have a coin....

One thing about used Bear Vaults -- the lid has been redesigned multiple times, and if the can is older the lid may need replacing. Older versions are no longer on the list of approved cans for the parks. Fortunately, the guy who makes them is happy to help.

Mine is the latest version, as I said, BV 500. I bought 2 for an extended trip, and now only need one. It has only been used for the one trip.

I'm getting the Model BV450/BV500. It seems pretty clean.
If I could highjack Bob's thread one more time... where do you guys store your canister full of food at night? 100 yards downwind of your tent? On the ground? Should I expect to hear bears playing soccer with it at night?
