In case your thinking of going backpacking in the Idaho Sawtooths, this web cam will help with current conditions: SawtoothsAlso watching the stream flows for the area is a good idea. For the area we do most of our backpacking the Twin Springs flow is a great indicator of when the water levels are safe to stream cross in the Queens River area. A flow rate of over 2000 cubic feet per second is unsafe stream crossing conditions. That includes the area shown by the Sawtooh webcam. With the Johnson Creek webcam, we get a view of the Big Creek area. Pretty much if there is snow at the Johnson Creek airport, crossing Big Creek is not safe. Idaho Airstrip Webcams

Thanks for sharing that. We should do the stream flow and snowpack stuff we've done in previous years. Here in the Upper Snake River Basin we were 93% of "normal" before the current snowfall.

absarokanaut Your are welcome There are a number of measuring stations located in the Snake River Basin. The trick, after finding one that serves the drainage, is learning what the numbers translate into in terms of stream crossing ability. I also follow the SNOTEL reports.

The Twin Springs stream flow went from 2k cfs to over 4000 cfs (cubic feet per sec.) in just a few days. I bet the stream crossing at the Little Queens River is a sight to behold. With that large boulder, I've seen the rooster tail shooting higher then 20ish feet. Exciting though, as at some point the cfs will start to drop. The image is from the Big Creek Avaition webcam, looking north. The snow is rapidly melting. That is the Johnson Creek Airport webcam. Not long ago, I was unable to see the '4.'

We got POUNDED yesterday; must been 3/4" of rain in half hour, changed to snow for awhile. I'm thinking heavy snow above 8k.
I have Stellla this weekend, my 135 LBS Brindle Mastiff Buddy that's chased bears away for me multiple times. she is one scary looking, big girl that doesn't know any better.
Have a good weekend Ohm. Write Phyllis Diller in on your ballot.

The Twin Springs stram flow is reporting 4450 cfs. The Twin Spring flow was over 5000 cfs. I expect the cooler temps will slow the flow down today but with clear skys and lower temps for the next few days the flow rate will jump back up. Crossing the Little Queens withTtwin Springs showing over 200 cubic feet per second is (as my wife puts it) suicide. Kinda a bummer that the Highland trail to Lucky Peak will be muddy this weekend. That is a wonderful 11 mile out and back with 2870 feet of gain/loss. Thanks for the well wishes absarokanaut Here is a Sawtooh Webcam link: Sawtooth
