The Needles (Canyonland)? That’s gloriously easy backpacking, unless you’re dumb enough to go in July.

Yes. The last thing Black Elk Wilderness needs is another goofy website advertising the most overused and overcrowded trail in the Black Hills. Called "moderate to hard" in difficulty, it is the easiest route to a peak named for a Lakota spiritual leader, a peak less than 4 air-miles from Ku Klux Klansman Gutzon Borglum's Four White Presidents (also called Mount Rushmore). Most any summer day, you can find some 5-year-old girl skipping along the same trail a hundred feet away from her parents in mountain-lion country. And when you get to the lookout tower at the peak, below may be that great view advertised. Ooops, it's a foggy day with lots of people. There are so many more difficult and secluded trails in the Black Hills, but few people will ever see them with one more lazy website pushing the same old nonsense. Notice the little kids in lower right corner of the photo:

41. Artists Bluff Trail, Franconia Notch State Park, New Hampshire
0.5-mile roundtrip, gaining 200 feet in elevation.

I would definitely need oxygen on something like that. I think Ed Viesturs got HAPE on that one.

I would definitely need oxygen on something like that. I think Ed Viesturs got HAPE on that one. That's nearly a 9 degree slope. Lucky he didn't fall to his death. |

Another clickbait article with a lot of very questionable choices.I do agree with the Keyhole, but would rank it up towards the top of the list for difficulty for the average person.

I could only manage 9 miles, 2600' gain with a loop through the Hancocks last weekend. Took me over 6 hours with a full backpack, which ended up being useless as I couldn't find a good, legal spot to camp. If I'd done Artists Bluff after that, it would have done me in.  |
