Nice that it will run. But I don't like camping at that altitude anymore; I try to stay below 9k. So I won't be planning a trip there. I used the water taxi on a couple trips years ago, and I really remember how good a burger from the cafe tasted after backpacking in the area.

The secret to backpacking the Sierra is to be retired so you can spend a week in the area acclimatizing before you start up toward those 10-12,000’ passes. |

Twenty Lakes Basin for me is more day hike country. There and up to the Monroe Natural Area. Lupine, columbines, monkey flowers and bunches of adorable pikas.

Twenty Lakes Basin for me is more day hike country. There and up to the Monroe Natural Area. Lupine, columbines, monkey flowers and bunches of adorable pikas. We twice did a nice loop (with a fair bit of off-trail route-finding) over the ridge to McCabe Lakes, Roosevelt Lake, and back to the resort over the shoulder (or summit) of Conness. That’s what I think of when I think of Saddlebag Lake  |

I've been in the Twenty Lakes Basin twice and camped at Shamrock both times. I hiked up to the saddle overlooking Upper McCabe Lake, but that's all. I didn't do any serious hiking like you, Rebecca and High Sierra fan, have done.

I didn't do any serious hiking like you, Rebecca and High Sierra fan, have done. Going up to the Harvey Monroe Hall Natural study area past the Sawmill walk in campground is very worthwhile imho. The area has an interesting ecological research history reaching back to series of Carnegie studies on plant environmental adaptations and the area up toward mt.
