Hello everyone.
I used to hang out on the Backpacker forums (and had a subscription to the magazine for many years--and was sad to learn that the magazine died out). I am a Washington state guy who has always lived in the PNW. I was actually involved, however briefly, in the early discussions on the BP forums regarding a NW backpacker get-together hike, which sadly I never was able to join. I remember Sarbar being prominent in those discussions. And before you ask, no I don't remember what my username was in the forums back then, as I have had a lot of stuff happen in my life, have changed addresses (both physical and email) several times (the US Marshals haven't found me yet), and don't even remember what email account I had way back then.
I've been away from backpacking for over a decade now, and I am fat and out of shape at the age of 55. This year I started working on myself mentally, emotionally and physically so that I can bring my life into line with the person I want to be. I spent a number of years drinking too much and wallowing in depression (long story), and earlier this year I decided that enough was enough. I stopped drinking a couple months ago. I started listening to and reading books on self improvement in my personal and professional life, and am about to join a local gym so I can work towards getting a good base fitness established so I can backpack and xc ski without feeling like I'm going to die. In my work, I do a fair amount of physical labor, so I'm not too worried about the backpacking aspect of things.
My wife used to go camping with me, but as we have gotten older, she's not comfortable "roughing it" anymore. So I'll be going solo when I get back on the trail. If any of y'all want to reach out, feel free to email me at: nwbackpacker@hotmail.com
