Hello people going backpacking in Europe, Asia, Latin America, etc…. This forum is for people who trek into wilderness or similar areas – not budget travelers who carry their stuff in a backpack vs. suitcase. BUT, I do want to offer several resources to you: Lonely Planet: General budget travel, broken down by area, interest, and other topics. A good starting point, but, important to do some research before posting questions like, “What is there to do in India" or wherever? They’re as testy over there as they are here with lazy questions. www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/. Travelfish: Good site for Southeast Asia (mainland and island): www.travelfish.org/Blogs: Worthwhile to google something like “blog Japan” (or wherever). Have to get past advts and more or less fake sites. You’ll know when you get to actual traveler blogs. There are also blog sites, e.g., www.travelblog.org/ Here is part of a travel blog that I did: ckjournal.blogspot.com/2012/01/hue-its-raining.html Also a dated budget guide to SE Asia (still some good info, including routes, sex, scams, health, etc.): sites.google.com/site/chaskemp/asia_travel Happy Trails!

My wife and I are in our early 20's and we are looking to travel either SE Asia or S America. Price is a big factor in our trip, however we are concerned about the treatment I would recieve in SE Asia. Since, we have heard many negative things regarding african americans in SE Asia. I am mixed however and don't look like any one race. I am 5' 8" light brown skin, lots of body hair, bushy beard, with shaved head (but it will grow an afro if left uncut) she is naturally brunette but dyed blonde with green eyes. So, is SE Asia okay for us to travel or would we be better accepted in S America? Thanks.

There were a few african americans out near where I use to live that claimed they were related to TJ.One gave me a ride in a 4wheel drive back to my cabin when I was stranded due to high snow.As it turns out he helped build the cabin I lived in.
As for your question my only experience with SE Asian travel is through reading a number of bike touring journals. No African Americans but a number of nationalities and no one seemed to have any trouble even in the highlands of Laos bordering China where heavily armed kids patrolled the roads. The consensus of bike travellers seems to be that SE Asia is a bargain and as long as you are spending money the locals are happy.Even less issues in the backpacker havens that cater to travelers.

I have never been to southeast Asia, but in my experience prejudice/discrimination depends on two factors.
1) General national/cultural/historical/religious beliefs (and their fervency).
2) The individual people you meet.
Any particular country/region/town may be more or less prejudiced. But you may meet open-minded individuals in generally hostile places, or hostile people in generally accepting places.
That's a long-winded way of saying "I dunno, good luck."
When I travel I find that I can get a pretty good sense of the place as soon as I'm there. Every restaurant, hostel, hotel, laundromat, and bar will be different. If I feel that I'm not wanted I don't hesitate to leave - restaurant, store, street, neighborhood, whatever. It's easier on everyone that way.
