No, not with 8 billion people demanding more and more from the nature a few millionaires might wish to "save." We have long since entered the Anthropocene. The 6th Extinction is well underway. And while there is much we can do, time and the large-scale willingness to act are short and fleeting.

If everybody ads their drop to the bucket that's a big river. Friend who was in the Corps of Engineers was told first day of class, "basically it's our job to control water, but water always wins" Amen, I say. Water does always win. Add your drops. |

Oh, Lord. Don't start me on the Corps and the Atchafalaya Basin.  If they (and many others) would resolve themselves to working with water instead of fighting it, that would be an improvement. As it is all of the dams, spillways, etc., reduce the ability to absorb storm surges from the likes of hurricanes. It will take millionaires, but it will also take average citizens, politicians, national/state/local governments, NGOs, and, well, pretty much everyone. And a heck of a lot of money. I'm not the best example, but I like to think that I'm better than most, but that may be little more than hubris. |

With 8 billion Homo sapiens, an incredibly invasive species, walking around and increasing their numbers exponentially we are all riding the Titanic here with no lifeboats.
I practically lived in an airplane mapping out the wild development of our species needs for my entire career and flew to many exotic locations for pleasure trips but I’ll never get on any airplane ever again. However many wise and highly educated people think we have passed the tipping point and the resulting climate change will destroy the things we hold most dear. Nothing on this planet lives very long.
We moved right up to the mountains, canyons and their 400 square miles of wilderness so we don’t have to drive a vehicle and try to tread lightly leaving no trace. Everything I need is right up in there.
Today I’ll cook Tandoori chicken, squash au gratin and roast the squash seeds, everything cooked in the sun oven. That uses 5 million tons of energy per second but the sun is gonna burn it up anyway so I’ll just piggyback on. This doesn’t heat up the house and then use more energy to cool it back down so a net 10% savings on the entire household energy for our hot months. It’s going to take a lot more than that but who really lives a simple non consumptive life anymore? A few but not that many. It will most definitely take everyone , not just a few fat cats to blame it on, but how likely is that? I can’t even swear off chicken. So I’m part of the problem.

In any case, tell me more, or start a new thread if you think it's worth it. I'm having solar panels put on the roof, but I'm open to better suggestions, especially when the menu and circumstances are right. I replaced the gas stove with induction, but induction uses a lot of watts, especially for things like bread (high temp short duration) and gumbo and broth (low temp long duration). For sauteing vegetables (low temp short duration) I don't think that it matters as much. Once I get some other things fixed/upgraded around here, I plan to build an asado pit like I had before (roasted vegetables and meat), and a brick oven (bread, pizza, meat, etc.). But I honestly don't think I'll use the oven much. Time will tell. And then there's the environmental cost of burning wood, which I have a lot of here, so that's a bit of a minus for the outdoor pit and oven. |

Reuben I did post about the sun oven and a thread of its own makes sense because it can do things I’d never have known before using it.. So which sub forum should the sun oven go in? It’s not for backpacking, way heavy and bulky, but it will dehydrate things by turning it away from direct sunlight, otherwise too hot.
