thanks for posting this! I was in 8th grade in 1968, with a head full of the thrills of mountain climbing. Something I knew nothing about living just outside Washington DC at the time. Wasn't until the mid 70's I started down that path!
If you like old mountaineering films, search Youtube for Gaston Rebuffat. French alpinist from the 1940's - 1960's who was famous for putting up some of the most difficult routes in the Alps. His view of climbing was not so much to 'conquer' a mountain, but to be come one with it, and climb on it's terms. Most of the vids are in French, but still worth watching, just to see the technique used back then. Also his books (some in English) are truly inspiring. Not only was he a climber, but a bit of a poet. Still have copies on the shelf from when they came out. His description of being pinned down on the north face of the Eiger during a storm will give you bad dreams for a while. This was LONG before goretex, nylon climbing ropes, any real kind of lightweight anything. All anchors with hand driven pitons. Great stuff!!
