I apologize if this has been discussed before but I can't find it. I just finished "Grandma Gatewoods Walk" by Ben Montgomery. In 1955, at the age of 67, Emma (Grandma) Gatewood became the 3rd person, and 1st woman, to thru hike the entire Appalachian Trail. And she did it wearing Keds instead of hiking boots and did not take a tent or sleeping bag. It's a very good and fun read.

Hey RS, thanks for mentioning the interviews, I'm going to look for them. I've corresponded with her granddaughter via email a few times and she told me about a documentary about her that's being shown around the country called "Trail Magic" that I'm going to see if it comes around here. Grandma Gatewood was the first person to hike the AT 3 times, finishing the last one at the age of 75.

I have met Ben Montgomery as he lives in my hood. He did a lot of research for the book interviewing most anyone that knew her. It is an interesting book especially for those that have hiked the trail.
