Professional sports players make millions of dollars a year, but still have unions. Same for actors, etc. Nobody ever asks "I wonder what happened" in those cases.
Patagonia is profitable enough to make its founder a billionaire, so its profitable enough to compensate & treat its employees better. Kudos to them for not passively waiting for that to be offered voluntarily.
ETA: Chouinard's charitable giveaways may have caused his fanboys to giggle & coo...but I imagine it had a different effect on many employees.
