As well packed greenhorns we're looking to test our wits and gear out on something close to home. I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with the Caprock Canyon park and if so, any advice on which trails to explore would be greatly appreciated.
Looking to do a three day two night long weekend outing. Thanks.

No, but I am familiar with hiking in dry conditions. From the looks of the map ( Cap Rock st pk, Tx) it appears you could put together a decent loop with minimal road walking. Maybe enough for a single night out. With 6-9 mile days, it might give you an idea of how the packs feel, if you need more padding for sleeping, how the kitchen works out, etc...

I've still never been to Caprock, but you might also consider hill country options, might be a slightly easier drive from Houston than the panhandle. Lost Maples and Hill Country State Natural Areas have decent backpacking, as does Colorado Bend State Park and the Goodwater Trail around Lake Georgetown.

I did a little backpacking at Caprock Canyon.
There is a lengthy trail that was converted from a railroad right-of-way to a trail, that is in an area not contiguous with the park itself.
I did an two-night backpack in the park itself, then a couple overnights along segments of the old railroad line.
One of the segments has an old railroad tunnel you can hike through.
It probably wouldn't appeal to hard-core wilderness aficionados, but I enjoyed myself and hope to do it again someday.

I forgot to mention that the State Park has a brochure to go with the railroad trail, that describes the history of the line and the features that you encounter as you hike (or bike) along the route. I really get into things like that, and it added a lot to my enjoyment of the hike.

I remember Chuck D giving a positive trip report on it. I doubt it is available anymore. I wish he was still around to ask.

Neville and I explored Caprock a few years back. It wasn't an area for real overnight backpacking that I remember but it was a super place to hike and explore! I remember there being a "backpackers" campground of sorts. We both really enjoyed exploring the canyon. Watch for quicksand by the river ;-). Neville found some, his hiking partner may have laughed at him a bit before helping him out......
I would definitely recommend the trip for exploring, neat area.
