Hi all, I recently had to update my outdoor clothing a little bit and decided to give Eddie Bauer a try. I find their winter jackets a little too short for me however the BC Igniter & Stormdown Downlight are a little longer and seem very interesting. Has anyone tried one of those two jackets and can give some feedback? I am preferring the BC Stormdown Downlight but the price is quite steep even when on sale. Thx

I have two Downlights--an older unhooded one and a newer hooded one. The latter has the silly stormdown FWIW. I love them. I have to have tall sizes and EB's talls are indeed tall, unlike almost everyone else's talls. Well built and all that; the one has lasted me 5 or 6 seasons now and is showing no real signs of wear. I have an older Igniter jacket that is nice for wearing around town, but too heavy and unpackable for backpacking. Not sure how the newer version compares.
I have a number of other garments from EB/FA and am a fan.
Edit: Just a comment on the Downlight price...with everything from EB, you have to lay low and watch. At least once a year things will go on a 40% off sale. I never buy anything if it's not at least 30% off. Sometimes you get lucky and can combine a 40% off sale with something on clearance. (That rarely happens for me but if you don't need odd sizes you might find a good deal if you wait and watch.)

I don't have either of those jackets but I do have a few EB clothes. They all seem well made. I guess I should consider myself lucky since my girlfriend's cousin use to work for them in Jackson Hole and got us discounts. ...and I got some EB birthday and Christmas presents.

I had one of their down jackets and it started shedding very quickly, so I returned it. But perhaps quality has improved since then. Agree to wait for a sale. There should be one coming up soon, IIRC. I got mine at 40% off as well as lots of other stuff. I generally have been very happy with their quality.

Personally, I consider EB gear gimmicky and over-priced. There is better gear for less. Try LandsEnd for cheap decent layers.

The First Ascent clothing is, in my experience, quite good. Overpriced, yes, which is why you have to wait for the sales. And if you need tall sizes, EB is a godsend.

I've had several pieces of down and fleece First Ascent/Eddie Bauer clothing and found them to be pretty good. For me, they always fit quite well. But do wait for sales. Our local store often - maybe 3-4 times a year - has 40% off on all their stuff. That would be a pretty good deal but their regular prices are a bit high, IMO.

I think First Ascent has excellent outerwear, though I would never pay full-price. I'm a big fan of the "BC" fabric. I have an old hybrid softshell with it and my DH has an older model of the BC down jacket that you're considering. Both great jackets, though neither would be my choice for backpacking. We both wear them around town all the time, and the BC down jacket's good for winter sports. FWIW, I got the BC down jacket for around $225 on sale a last winter. As much as I like the jacket, I doubt I would pay more than $250. His has pit-zips but I think they've gotten rid of that feature in the current model, which is too bad.
What are you going to use the jacket for? I really like REI's "Elements" fabric, too. Just got my son the REI "Jove" jacket, which has some sort of synthetic insulation (Primaloft-like). Not a super cold-temp jacket but perfect if you're going to be a little active. Priced less than $200.
