backroadramblers.com/hiking-during-hunting-season/ Good video in there. I never thought about the side view with a vest. Like I said earlier I wear a florescent yellow vest when doing traffic but then my front or back is usually facing the traffic. When hiking most likely hunters would see you from the side as you move through the woods and vest isn't as visible then. One tip I might add to that article is stay on trails. Hunters should try to know where trails are. Picking your way off trail through the woods probably makes you move a little like a deer.

Yes! I was actually looking for something that said they. aren't supposed to shoot toward or over trails but could not find it. In any event on trail should be safer with some hunters. I think it is also illegal to shoot from a road, they actually put dummy elk near roads to catch them.
I was hiking last fall and a pair of Bow hunters were in camouflage , did not ask them why, I did ask them how they would get an Elk out of where we were and they did not say anything. Went to a small town after and a girl serving ice cream said her Dad was bow hunting where I was. (edit and were in camouflage)

I've run into fully camouflaged turkey hunters a couple of times. Their camo works very well. It included camo netting over their faces and camo wraps on their shotguns. All of a sudden they were just there. I didn't see a father and son once until I was like 30 feet from them and they moved.

Upper New York State farmers spray paint “COW” on the sides of their stock. Just sayin’
I’d be thinking twice plus before testing what some victim of a severe case of buck fever “should” do. Maybe after the first week, let Darwin have his share.

LL Bean, Orvis, any place that sells hunting equipment have inexpensive vests you can wear over your outer layer. unless you hunt all the time or want to avoid getting hit by cars while directing traffic around road construction, dressing like a big traffic cone seems....excessive.

In the wide open spaces of Wyoming, some trophy animal is in season from August to New Years. Predators is year around and folks shoot pet dogs for wolves or coyotes. Also, unleashed hiking pets are in danger from livestock operators. Most orange hunting swag would not pass safety standards, that is why I buy mine at industrial safety stores. I like highway flagger mesh vests 2X larger to fit over parkas or packs. I announce a campaign for hikers to use only lime green fluro colors to differentiate ourselves from the hunters. I have been using these industrial vests on some of my long day hikes on a rando bike in my area I notice a definate difference in how I am observed by drivers. IME better than a flashy light in front. OSHA standards for high visibility

rangewalker, I long ago observed as a driver how much easier it is to see a cyclist in a hi vis jersey vs. some pretty thing in lots of colors. Especially when passing in and out of shadow (as on most roads with trees around), the multi-color jerseys become almost camo. From then on that’s all we wore. Sadly, still not always enough, but a place to start.
