Not sure how many here have heard of Dick Proenneke, but if you have not, I can highly recommend reading his journals. Fascinating guy; a master builder, paddler, hiker, photographer, wildlife filmmaker and journaler. He built a cabin in Alaska using only hand-tools. PBS had a series of specials on his life in Alaska in the early 2000s. I’d start with the Early Years journal, but his 2nd journal is available for free to read at the NPS Lake Clark site:
Life is a long walk forward thru the cars of a passenger train each filled with; strangers whose stories we never learn, dear friends we long remember and passing acquaintances whose names & faces we take in like a breath and soon breathe away.... So many cars, so many passages."
