As many of you know my favorite "place" in the world is the Southern Absaroka Mountain Front North of US HWY 26/287 "between" Buffalo Valley, WY and the Wind River Indian Reservation, WY which is well over the East side of the Continental Divide on the highway at Togwotee Pass. I however am incredibly fortunate to live just 4 miles south of Grand Teton National Park here in Jackson, WY. I'm sure most of you have seen much better photos of the Tetons than mine but yesterday 11/11/23 I spent the afternoon in what is "the" Park for us here in the Valley of Jackson Hole, "The Hole."
I did a total of about 3.5 miles of strolling from different stops at Leeks Marina, Colter Bay, and Cattlemans Bridge. Hyperphagia is in full swing with the grizzlies and the bull moose were doing a bit of seemingly play paddle sparring. We get a whole lot of sun in this part of the world so I loved it only dancing in and out at times quite briefly on a gloriously gray day.The highest peaks towered into the proverbial heavens all afternoon long.
When it comes to the weather we've had a pretty uneventful fall. No major lasting October snow accumulation in the Valley this year and it seems fall and winter weather comes later and later every year. That said I could share many stories of winter weather from every month of the year here at higher elevation. Just one was the worst winter storm of less than 2 full days and deepest snows I've ever driven through. It was driving in and out of the Books Lake area in the Southern Absaroka when it received just under 4' of snow and the Tetons got hammered with more than 30" the first week of October 2005. Our fall visitors continue to roll the dice with the weather so be sure you know what you're doing if you look into any off season bargains coming here.
From the shores near Leeks Marina.
From the highway North of Pilgrim Creek Road.
From Elk Ranch Mt. Leidy glows in later afternoon sun. If you have a decent SUV with a little bit of clearance, etc. In the Bridger-Teton National Forest Mt. Leidy is perhaps the first great "big" mountain hike for younger children I've ever come across. 1.2 miles but 1,200' of gain. One of the greatest views I've ever enjoyed with 10+ mountain ranges, among them arguably the greatest terrestrial view of the length of the Teton Range and the North side of the glorious Gros Ventre Range.
These two were doing some play paddle sparring near the Teton Science School.
