I have never looked at other sites for gear reviews. Even the old Gear Guide issue was read with a grain of salt. IMO, YT is not a place to look for a review, but a good place to see more places to go. Problem is, by the time it's on YT, the throngs will be there.
I may have purchased 2 pieces of gear based on reviews, a McHale pack and a ULA pack. Both were good choices at that time of my backpacking life. Shoes, sleep system, tents, etc... have all been bought without the benefit of reading some other opinion. Sure, maybe mistakes were made, but by 50 I had pretty much figured out what I wanted.

There are a few folks out there who do pretty solid reviews, though of course right now I can’t think who I’ve watched—it’s been a while. I’m more inclined to run stuff past this outfit, talk to people I actually know who use a piece of gear, etc. That’s how I got on to my ULA pack, EE Quilt, and TT tent.

I haven't looked at reviews for a long time since I don't feel much need to change my gear. However I always liked the review approach taken by www.backpackgeartest.org/

I also like Backpacking Light, but careful consideration is needed to transform their findings onto my application space.

I also consider Backpackinglight to be a decent source of information. I think sectionhiker may have, from my perspective, the most consistently reliable gear reviews of any such site. On youtube I watch, mostly for entertainment value, Dixie, Justin Outdoors, and Dan Becker, occasionally a few others.

I am going to add this: With as many gear posts that RS/DR creates, I can't help but wonder if there is any connection between him and some marketer. There are places and people who would mine a resource like this one to see where their advertising $$ should go, or if any of those Top Ten lists of manufacturers are noticed by us. If such a thing were to be the case, then I would hope to see most of this sort of post to disappear.

Just enjoy the outdoors, gear and community. I’m pretty passionate about outdoor gear & apparel. But then again you’ve always had a heavy-hand, bias and dislike for me due to my politics; and you always come up with some BS to edit or delete my posts. DR

If we are talking gear reviews I take a consensus approach. My Osprey Aether showed up in a number of top 10 backpacks lists. Then I search the web and YouTube for that item's reviews. If the reviews are consistently good and nothing comes up that's a deal breaker for me then I have my choice.
Just because Dan Becker says a pack is great doesn't mean it will be great for me. Maybe worth looking at based on his recommendation though.
I need a new solo tent and I am looking at a Durston Mid 2. I haven't found a bad review yet and a lot of good word based on its price point.

I sometimes look at OutdoorGearLab.Org. i think they're reliable for the most part, though one of our daughters disagreed with the assessment that her winter jacket was 'relatively light,' and i had to agree. super warm and functional, but it felt very bulky.
I used to like Backpackgeartest.org, but I suspect from a recent browse that the site isn't being updated as regularly as one would want, if at all.
I'm part of the review corps for Trailspace.com. The review corps reviews on trailspace are peer-reviewed before they go live; i think they're reliable. the more generalized user reviews, i think the quality is more variable. Note, Trailspace users who are brand reps, guides/outfitters, media are supposed to disclose that, and their profiles reflect it.
