For years I wore either an Ice Breaker, Smart Wool, or Duckworth Merino wool t-shirts for hiking. All were lightweight (150), and I mostly tried to wear/buy v-neck shirts that regulated heat and provided for better ventilation. These shirts were great when I was living in a high and dry climate. Moving to the Pacific Northwest nearly 14 years ago I continued wearing them. As I live on the wetter west side of the Cascades, these shifts did not breathe as well or dry as quickly due to moisture. I also started getting a rash along the underside of my bicep near the shirt seams. Quite irritating, really.
So, about two, years ago I made the switch to Capilene t-shirts. More specifically, Patagonia Capilene Cool Daily Graphic t-shirts (short sleeve) and hoodies.
Wow! I love these shirts! I had worn Capilene way in the past, but became a big fan of Merino when I lived in Montana. I highly recommend trying either Patagonia’s Capilene Cool Daily Graphic or Cool Daily Shirts (you save a few bucks with no design). What I like about these shirts and hoodies are how lightweight and breathable they are compared to some of the other shirts I’ve worn.
They work extremely well in either heat or cool conditions. I wear these shirts all the time as I really like the feel of the material and their breathability factors. Minimal seams and a treatment for the stink factor are two other things I like about these shirts. I can’t think of another shirt I’ve had that works as well wicking away moisture and sweat.
I turned a buddy of mine from Montana on to them. He wears them all the time, too. Whether he’s working (as a fire lookout in a tower), or just hanging out near his place in Polebridge. I’ve also given several of these shirts/hoodies to friends. All seem to really enjoy them.
These shirts have held up well. I’ve had absolutely zero problems with wear ‘n tear. Much more affordable and comfortable than my Merino shirts. I can usually find them on special at several websites for a good price. If you’re looking for a great shirt or hoody, give them a try. I think you’ll really like them. I sure do.
So, what are your favorite hiking shirt(s)?
