Hi,
Was planning on putting together a hiking trip starting at the train drop-off point and then doing the loop hike to Chicago Basin. Have done it the last few times in August. Is 5 July going to be too early? I seem to remember snow in July but it was some time ago.
Thanks for your help,

I was there the last week in July back in 2001 and there was no snow at all. I don't know if that was a typical year or not, but the snow was all gone.

We are starting July 1st from Wolf Creek Pass and hiking the CDT to the junction with the CT and down to the train stop at Elk Park. Would have preferred starting on June 27th but superseded by other commitments.
Snow conditions in the Animas Basin our currently c.100% of normal. We do not expect post hole purgatory. Hoping monsoon season starts a little late.

March is traditionally one of the snowiest months, and significant snow can also fall in April and May, so it's really too early to tell yet.

I figured I'd bump this thread since I'm planning the same thing. I'm looking at doing something similar to the Weminuche High Route described here I like what I've read about the route generally and that there's some off trail sections. I'm not married to this particular hike though, so I'm quite open to suggestions. I don't care much about peakbagging, I'm more interested in seeing the elements interact with each other. Boarding the train in Silverton is an option, but otherwise I don't yet have any shuttle options. I'd like to avoid the Chicago Basin use area as I know it'll be crowded. Should I anticipate groups on the rest of this?

Just returned from an aborted CDT section hike due to my partners altitude sickness, inability to eat and overall lack of pre-trip physical conditioning. Lucky to have gotten 60 miles and execute a successful and problematic exit strategy.
Anything near Chicago Basin, Elk Park, the cut-off to the Grenadiers and the CT/CDT junction north to Stony Pass will have lots of users. The train is $95 per person one-way or round trip. For the best shuttle possibilities, based on the route, I'd recommend going northbound from the Florida (pronounced Florita) trailhead. Park your vehicle at the train station in Durango, hire Buck Horn Transportation for the southern trailhead and return via train from either Elk Park or Silverton.
I'll be heading back to the Wemi at least once maybe twice more this season.
