For all of us old timers this probably means more, but Jim Brown has died at 87 yrs of age. Not only did he retire early, while still holding the record for the most yards gained, but he became an activist in the Civil Rights movement.
I grew up in Ky, so we often had the Cleveland Browns on the TV. Back when there was only one game per week, on a Sunday no less. B & W TV.

An important figure in so many ways---although he flew under the radar of a lot of media back then. they didn't really cover activism in the same way back then. I didn't really understand his role until much later.

I was 8 years old in Dec 1965 when Jim Brown played his last game, and wasn't interested in watching sports on TV then.
I do of course remember when my football hero broke Brown's record in 1984. Jim Brown led a very long and prominent life. Walter Payton was taken by illness before he reached 50.
But this is about Jim Brown, whose amazing ability stood above others in his sport like Babe Ruth in baseball.
It is one thing to thrill fans with natural ability, and another to provide leadership for civil rights and other causes as Mr. Brown did.

An important local (Syracuse) hero/celebrity who visited the area quite often. He'll be missed.
On the athletics side, in addition to a Hall of Fame football career, he is generally accepted to be the best lacrosse player ever, was an All-American in track, and lettered in basketball.
