Might be that the bear community has infiltrated the milk cow pasture.

Given all the grazing I saw black bears doing down in GSMNP meadows I wouldn’t be surprised.

How have I made so many trips around the sun without ever hearing the word "piebald"?

How have I made so many trips around the sun without ever hearing the word "piebald"? You didn’t read enough Zane Grey when you were young! Or watch enough TV westerns! The horse in “National Velvet” was a pied, and even named “The Pie”. The Lone Ranger’s pal Tonto rode a pinto, which is our term for “piebald”. Granted, there’s a case here for strong curiosity about the things we don’t fully understand: when reading “The Pied Piper” as a child, did you ever wonder why he was called “pied”?

Well...I knew that the Pied Piper was an allegory about the religious brainwashing of children, referencing the Children's Crusade of 1212 and their death in a shipwreck (or their being sold into slavery, in some accounts). So I was kind of hoping someone had hit him in the face with a pie.

You can learn something new everyday. Never knew about "piebald" before. I think I ran into a piebald rattler once. It had a black head and black patches on its body but otherwise rattler colored. It was a big one and the black head made it look very evil.
