Has anyone hiked to the top of Quail Mountain from Juniper Flats in Joshua Tree? I tried this a few years ago and failed because I took a left where the wash splits, but taking a right seemed blocked and there were no footprints. Let me know if you have any info as I'm headed back in 2 weeks.
Thanks!

I have done it a few times backpacking and dayhiking from the Juniper Flats Trail head off Key View Road. If you are going from there, follow the California Hking Trail for about 4.5 to 5 miles. You will hit an obvious sandy road. Take a right, the road will dead end after a 1/4 or 1/2 mile or so and after that it is Cross Country. Pretty much go straight from there and pick your route up. There are a few different routes to get to the peak. I usually end up going a little left of the peak and then heading over to the peak and coming down a different way. I have ran into Big Horn Sheep on my way up the first time up there.

Yes, I've gotten as far as the dead end and proceeded up the wash. I followed it to the left and it got extremely steep towards the end of the wash. I was thinking of going right instead into a minor wash, but that didn't look like it had been traveled much if at all.

Reprise: I finally summited Quail Mountain by taking the main wash all the way up to the saddle (it gets steep). Once at the top of the wash I went up (right) until I got up to the false summit.
From there, I had to go down, across and intermediate peak and finally up to the top. The view was great and there were a few old airplane parts from a crash.
Anyway, I was glad I finally did it.
