I’ve had the 66i for a while and have liked it. Whether whatever new features the 67i have are enough to upgrade I’ll have to see. www.garmin.com/en-US/p/890109?utm_source=Americas&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=en-US%20Delivery,%20GLOBAL-OUT-ANMT-MCJT55441-GPSMAP%2067%2F67i%20and%20eTrex%20SE%20-%20Announcement%20Email There’s also a new Etrex. In a quick look battery life seems hugely improved from 35 hours. “BATTERY LIFE Turn on expedition mode, and get up to 425 hours of battery life while using inReach technology. In the default tracking mode, you get up to 165 hours of battery life, and your device will save your location every 10 minutes.” Rei 66i description: www.rei.com/product/163568/garmin-gpsmap-66i

It's tempting.

BigLoadIndeed that battery life pop is impressive. A big issue for what’s intended to be both an everyday use navigation tool and a safety communicator/beacon.

That’s what I transitioned from some years back: a 60csx and an ACR microfix beacon PLB. The beacon ran out if certification life so I needed a replacement. Folding two devices into one saved weight and the added options opened by the communication capability of the 66i was attractive. Allowing me to better manage a response versus the all or nothing PLB. If I was only going to be late why not have the ability to tell SAR or my home backup that and divert a search?

I got a new battery in my PLB a year ago. I wonder if I'd be willing to leave it at home if I had a 67i.

I like that Garmin uses the reliable Iridium satellite network as a counterpoint to PLB reliability being so robust. I think I’d + PLB with a group, but solo less weight is nice. I wonder what maps it has built in. I got the 24k chip for one area where I backpack but that left out the rest of the country.

I cooked my ancient Garmin handheld, which worked fine, when a AA battery leaked inside. Thanks for posting. Do these use the same MicroSD cards as older models?

Yes. They use micro SD cards for added memory. Specs cite 32 Gb.

I'm curious. To those who use a dedicated gps instead of a smartphone with a gps/map app, I'd like to ask why. I'm probably missing something and there are good reasons for a dedicated gaps/map device. It's probably in how the device is used.
Some of the SAR units around here are converting to the CalTopo app on a smartphone because this allows real-time tracking and eliminates the need to download gps data once back to the staging area.

For day use I could see the battery power of a phone, with a modest battery pack backup (I routinely carry an Apple MagSafe, 40% extra for my 14 pro max) working out.
Further nav gps come in either touchscreen or button interface designs. The [corrected] latter is more glove friendly than a touch screen though special gloves are becoming more common.

The matter is more glove friendly than a touch screen though special gloves are becoming more common. This is exactly why I was asking. A simple answer and something I had not considered.
