What are your favorite waterfall day hikes in North Carolina? I remember watching Last of the Mohicans (with Madeline Stowe) and really being impressed with the scenery there. I’ve been to Asheville and the Bryson City areas in the past. Thx...!
Regards,
DR

Wow, that would be a long list. Are you looking for mountains, waterfalls, day hikes, multi day treks, all the above?

The waterfall scene in last of the mohicans was filmed at chimney rock state park. At one time you could walk behind the falls, like they do in the movie, but not sure if you still can.
Probably my favorite day hike for waterfalls is North Harper Creek, in the Wilson Creek drainage. You can see about 4-5 different falls in a day. Linville falls is not a long hike, and quite popular with people as its right off the parkway, but its a very impressive waterfall.

Some of the scenes were filmed at DuPont State Forest, which has some awesome waterfalls. Also in that area is Gorges State Park, which includes Rainbow Falls -- one of the greatest in NC.
Wilson Creek is a good sized wilderness with a fairly extensive trail system.
Linville Gorge is nearby, which also has a large wilderness area with many miles of trails. The view from the top of Hawksbill is one of the finest in NC, and the hike from table rock through the Chimneys offers many gorgeous views.
Shining Rock Wilderness is also very popular, with 6000+ (feet) peaks easily accessible off the BRP.
Somewhat less visited is Panthertown Valley, sometimes called the Yellowstone of the East.
This is only a partial list of what NC has to offer.

downriver, are you genuinely looking for suggestions on waterfall hikes in WNC? or just interested in conversation?
There's loads of great hikes in Pisgah & Nantahala forests that I could suggest, if you are traveling this way. lots of books have been written on the subject as well.

Family Sherpa,
I am thinking of visiting the area to explore retirement options/relocation. Probably not until late summer or fall. I'm looking at Greenville, SC, but still am considering the Asheville area, too. I know Asheville is close to Greenville, so I thought I'd put a post up asking for recommendations.
I've visited Nantahala in the'90s. Mt. biked the Tsali Trails there. THX for sharing your knowledge of the area. Do you have any book recommendations? If so, thx again...
Happy Trails,
DR
