Anyone use this program before? I’m thinking of trading in a few items. Jackets seem to get better prices than a lot of gear. Might be useful for some here to trade their older gear for newer desired items. Gear can’t be older than six years old. You can search and see what you’ll get (ballpark) for your old gear at the link below. www.rei.com/used/trade-it-in/searchRegards, DR

I traded in a couple of sleeping pads that I didn’t find met my needs. I got a decent credit for them, which covered most of the cost of a single pad that did meet my needs.
IIRC the list of products they take back was very small, though it may have expanded—that was over a year ago.

I wasn't aware of this program. My experience with their sidewalk sales has been only failure, so I'm wondering if the traded-in stuff is any better vetted for quality.

I think they launched the program a year or two back. I know it was around a year ago that I used it. They do check over the gear, because they pay based on age and condition. But I don’t know what they do with the stuff that’s too crappy to sell since you have to send it in for assessment and I assume they aren’t going to send it back.

It'll be interesting to see if other stores and brands start similar programs. Patagonia has had its Worn Wear program for a while now. It's a popular and growing program. To have a successful program REI will have to ensure quality control of used gear for this program. I'm hoping other outdoor gear & apparel companies develop similar programs. www.rei.com/usedRegards, DR (Patagonia employee)

My daughter in 2020 came to her first father /daughter hike in a decade with all her swag from REI returns. So the trade-ins work. Megan has not been interested in backpacking in years but did a great job on her own research. The only place I was asked to step in was pack selection and fitting. We did that with a local outfitter.
I have three pieces of Worn Wear from Patagonia that are critical to my cold weather-winter kit that I would not have considered at full retail.

Think it’s to get in on eBay’s business to some extent. I can see it if mutually beneficial, as eBay has gotten loaded with fees and then postage (I’ve sold some barely used gear that didn’t match my expectations.. wouldn’t put anything really used up online though). On the buyer side REI is definitely trustworthy.
Patagonia has a similar program for their mostly clothing but I didn’t bite as the credit too low for that 1 piece of clothing not doing it for me. May check again…
