This summer I'll be sure to grab some photos of the roads I take the Civic over. Do! It was funny how minor the dips looked from outside the car, even though we were scraping a bit

My daily commute is over 70 miles round trip, and I probably come close to that on weekends, too You've got me beat, I do about 60 miles a day round trip. As the bird flies it's probably more like 40 miles point to point.

Probably slightly better than you. It takes me 60-70 minutes most days to drive the 30 miles from home to downtown DC and the parking garage. During the summer that drops to about 45 minutes.

New Outback performed well on authentic 4-wd road to South Bass Trailhead a week ago. Trailhead approximately 28 miles from pavement, time 2 hours 45 minutes one way. Usual high clearance, new model comes with light truck tires for more difficult road conditions and driver confidence. Odometer turned 1,000 on way out to Hwy. 64.

Is that the 2015 model? I ask because mine is the 2015 and yours looks almost identical except for the color.

It's a 2016, color is Tungsten. The two model years 2015 & 2016 could be similar.
When compared to my 2012 the 2016 has multiple improvements, such as the wicked cool electronic safety package, better engine and headlamp access, inside creature comforts, voice commands way superior. It also rides quieter inside. My confidence level for 4-wd roads up considerably. Also the spare tire is 1,000 miles vs. 50 miles on the 2012. The advancements from 2012 to 2016 where significant enough for me to trade in the former.

Mine is Tungsten as well; yours looked different to me. Used it through a couple of snowstorms here these past two winters when the roads were awful and she handled like a dream.
The capture comforts are nice, thing is an iPad on wheels. I love the thing with only one complaint, I cannot turn off the directions voice when I'm using the navigator.

One of the surprises of our Royal Arch loop was the time it took to drive the 28 odd miles to the trailhead. Red dirt....mmmm...can't wait for the weather to improve in SLC so I can start the red dirt removal process from our tent!

Westy...I was talking to a guy while pumping gas. He had a new Outback (moss green) and he said that there is a some kind of stronger AWD for under 20 miles per hour. Any info on that?
Of course the color doesn't matter...it's just that 1/2 of my Subie is moss green. (And I have the tan dust in and out of the Outback from our weekend...)

The primary AWD is automatic. There is a secondary AWD which is essentially a manual low gear option that does not need a clutch. The third option is the new "get out of jail" button they call X-Mode. X-MODE™
X-MODE adjusts engine response, optimizes the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, and actively employs the braking and traction control systems to maximize grip on slippery surfaces. It also helps provide additional traction when navigating steep inclines with Hill Descent Control.
I will likely never use the X-Mode button however the Hill Descent is the low, low, low gear for crawling up or down steep inclines. That's why I call it the "Get Out of Jail" button.
For me the best new 4-wd road feature is the factory tires, The Dueler H/P Sport AS has twin steel belts reinforced by spirally wrapped nylon to enhance durability and designed for SUVs and Light Trucks. On the gravel, forest service roads and low level 4-wd roads the scariest part is not negotiating the terrain so much as a tire issue. Deflating the tires to 25 psi and having a less puncture prone tire design helps mitigate travel bummer possibilities. Put about 1,000 highway miles with our trip and the tires are quiet and smooth on the freeway.

Westy, you got the Eyesight system? My wife got that in her 16 Forester. I'm impressed with it.
