I have a 2008 Forester and so far it has been a good vehicle. I tow small trailers without a problem. One that holds for kayaks/canoes and the other trailer that has my sailing dory. As I am not kind to vehicles I will keep it for at least 10 years but most likely much longer as I am not driving as much as I use to.

So I had a little time over the weekend to think about what we should get when my wife's Forester dies. For what it's worth, a couple of options I came up with were the Mitsubishi Outlander, and the Nissan Murano. Personally, I really like the Murano. Nissan's 3.5L V6 is a very trustworthy engine, but my wife doesn't like the way the grill looks..... I sat behind a Nissan VQ35HR (3.5L V6) for over four years and oversaw its lifetime mileage increase from 88,000km to over 250,000km. The engine (transmission, and rest of the powertrain for that matter) only ever saw routine maintenance. The wheel-bearings, calipers, and suspension on the other hand... were probably pretty tired after 250k. If I could have justified the cost, I'd have put myself into another G35/37x.

Looks like the Matrix lives to fight another day, so for now I am going to put off the purchase, but it is still going to happen within the next year, so I really appreciate the input. I will likely go with the Outback, but will at least consider some of the other options that have been suggested. Thanks a lot for the help, y'all are awesome.

You may want to get on the subaru forum and focus on the model and year you're looking at. They have categories for each model and if there are problems you'll see the reoccurring threads there. www.subaruoutback.org/forums/

All this Subaru talk.....traded in the 2012 Outback for the 2016. Safety features are awesome. Will test on authentic 4-wd road this weekend. Third Outback. The product is great, the dealer is contrarian. No hard sell, everything fair and square, cards face up on the table. The Service Department is competent and competitively priced. Plus they gave way upside trade-in.

In the end, we bought the car we need for the majority of our driving, not the one we want for a few days a year in the desert. That's crazy talk. I keep telling my wife I need one of these:

I got my 2010 Outback in December 2009, and racked up about 130 kmiles so far. I gave my 1997 Outback Sport to my mom at that time, with about 300 kmiles on it. Six years later she's still driving it.

You cover more miles than we do, BL. Our May 2010 car is only just up to 80K

BTW, we took our Prius on some "interesting" roads in Death Valley last week. Wouldn't have been anything to worry about in an Outback, but from the front seat of the Prius those little gullies looked like the Grand Canyon

I've saved at about 5,000 miles by being gone on business. (It's actually closer 10,000, but I cancelled it out with a few long road trips).

My wife drives a 2004 Forester. She has only 125K miles on it. At 100K we had to spend about $3500 for a valve job, machine the heads and associated work beyond the normal service cost. Except for that it hasn't been unusually expensive to maintain. Llamamama loves the visibility. Most of the newer cars have huge blind spots because of the sloped roofline styling and larger post, due to increased safety engineering I suppose. I've offered to buy her an upgrade, but she won't go for it.
