I'd like to hear some input on what trail/camp/hiking apps everyone is using. I've downloaded 5 or 6 and none are what I would consider ideal. Just from memory I've looked at iOverlander, gaia, campendium, Dyrt, and, of course, Alltrails.
I'm hoping to do a lot of road trips this year and would love to find free sites, (BLM land or whatever), wilderness camping up and down the pacific Northwest.
I'm not a fan of campgrounds as they can be expensive and are crowded with very little privacy.
Not too fond of roadside wild camping either other than an overnight rests between destinations.
I'm ok with car camping or packing in. But I'd like to see an app where I can enter these criteria and get tailored results with photos so I can create a travel itinerary before leaving home.
Thanks All and Wishing you an awesome 2023 outside.

Seems like something of that sort would have to be crowd-sourced. I also prefer to do dispersed camping on BLM or FS lands, and Gaia shows the boundaries. Whether there is camping on any given forest road is another matter.
ETA: I am assuming you are looking for it for camping by the car. On trail, you are either in an area where there are designated sites (many of the National Parks) or you are hiking where you can pick a campsite. No app required, really, just an awareness of who manages the land and a quick search for rules.

For boondocking with your rv or other vehicle I’d suggest looking at rv sites that specialize or at least include that option, I occasionally see them referred to in overlandung FB group posts where boondocking is mentioned as one feature of some rv apps. Fwiw anyplace an rv can camp legally isn’t wilderness. Another approach is find which national forests or BLM lands you’re interested in and look at their forest or region website for their OHV dispersed camping maps and regulations. For ex here’s Inyo National Forest’s start page for Off Highway (unpaved road) Vehicle use. www.fs.usda.gov/activity/inyo/recreation/ohvAlso for over 62 the Senior Access Pass has a 50% discount in national park campgrounds: brought my previous summers per night cost in Yosemite to $12 per night. In White Mountain NF in NH it was $11… ETA: here’s a recommended paper book state specific for inexpensive camping of that sort. www.facebook.com/100044323005153/posts/pfbid02uoYZGZyPgPiLneUFZjXk6vaDo3nUDvVPqCt9XETFV34BdbJf8Bz9od9LdbvwyBA8l/?mibextid=cr9u03And that FB page’s cheap camping guide: rvlifestyle.com/free-cheap-rv-sites-camping/#How_to_find_free_or_cheap_RV_campsites_in_National_Forests_and_GrasslandsAND one thing they point out is in a lot of the less populated parts of America cell service is spotty to nonexistent and paper is at the least a good backup. I can attest to that: in Yosemite there was one turn on the road to the campground that had minimal signal: nowhere else in the high country. In New Hampshire there was zero signal anywhere near the White Mountain NF campgrounds I stayed at. In Glacier my only choice was a Canadian cell service that carried “international roaming” charges of $1 per mb (!!!! Yes, MB, do that math…) Ditto the northern reaches of Vermont and NH. Oregon state parks along the coast offer some spectacular camping locations. No idea what they now charge. But New York State’s in the Adirondacks are okay imho at $18-$20 per night.

My top apps are Avenza, Google Earth (full installed version not web) and CalTopo. Avenza has had most maps I need in their store for little or no money. CalTopo has both browser and sync'ing mobile app. I do most planning with CalTopo. One of the great things about it is that it will import/export to most all formats. So on laptop its Google Earth and CalTopo. On my Android it is Avenza, CalTopo and Earthmate (for my InReach Mini). Don't forget to download for offline access. You might want to turn off mobile data and Wifi to test before you leave your data connection so you know you're doing it right. I would suggest that you can look for importable data for what you are looking at. This fall I section hiked the Northville Placid trail. With a little digging I found a KML with the trail as tracks and all the things like shelters as waypoints. That went into CalTopo which then was on my phone. You do have to be on a pay plan to download maps into CalTopo for offline use. There was also a High Peaks map for Avenza that covered the trail (no waypoints). I have a different process for car navigation. Were you actually looking for that?
P.S. Take a look at the following link. It may or may be of use. Under layers tab turn of Recreation layers. Under the Draw tab it looks like there is an export function. You might be able to get the data right into CalTopo. But this is the kind of patching together of data I do for planning.
apps.geocortex.com/webviewer/?app=36678252db204f2b86506fe9579fca14
P.P.S. I don't know if there will ever be just one app that ideal for everything.

What you're looking for doesn't exist. The sheer number of locations and search criteria is mind boggling. Those apps you mentioned are making "special places" harder and harder to find. I use All Trails, Avenza and Google Earth myself, but they're tools, not a concierge service.

Thanks for the input everyone. For some reason I'm not being notified via email of responses. So I checked back today and found all of these great posts. High Sierra Fan, Is that senior pass you mentioned something I can get online. Just had my 64th birthday last month and that was a great bit of information. To clarify my intentions for some who asked, I plan on taking road trips with my rooftop tent and dog. Mixed in with some trail, (backpacking), access campgrounds for some tent camping. Probably not straying too much from the Western states at first. Not afraid of doing some 4 wheeling to get there. Gonna check out Avenza now. ErnieW, I just ordered an InReach Mini2 yesterday and I'm still a little foggy on how to integrate it with my phone, Garmin watch, and the available maps. Gonna have to go to Youtube school I guess. Thanks Again Everyone.

vanderloo I looked back at my own profile and under Edit Profile I find Notifications. There is a section where you can ask the forum to send you immediate notice when a new post is made in a thread you follow. That is the only way I know to get an email notification. Unless I'm missing something, which is very possible.

While it’s available online there’s a huge array of places (136!) in Ca to get one in person immediately. I ended up getting mine at Great Sand Dunes NP because the listed offices near me weren't issuing them (or even answering their phones) in the summer of 2021.

Hopes and prayers Board: The Gear Closet I hope trail apps fit in this discussion group ... and 2 more similar notifications Seems to be some delay for instance Remember that gun-toting couple in Missouri has been in the Political forum for awhile, I dont follow this trail or even know it was out there, yet it is in the notices??
