Weed, feed, or sex. No one shares my tent for free.

The next evening no one would let him share a tent. That was the last I heard of him on the PCT. Some people confuse "living off the land" and "surviving by their wits" with "mooching".

Now to be fair, successfully talking one's way into some food and a tent every night does require a staggering amount of wit.

My wife did a 3 day self sufficent solo trip with a 46L bag; she carried 4 days worth of food as part of her 10E's. Anyways, that is as small of a pack that my indirect experience goes. My wife did not take a cookset on that 60 mile trip. 10E's = 10 Essentials? ala www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/ten-essentials.html?

The video of the fellow hiking the AT with a 20L backpack is nice. The hiker does admit he has left off some 10E's. And the hiker did not have 3(4) days worth of food in that pack...[ It is the AT where there's plenty of just off-trail eats and summer may be fairly benign. I use the same 20L pack ... for jogging with a wind-jacket and light beanie handy. We never learned the OP's desired location btw..
