I've got some trip report catching up to do now that my backpacking season is over for the year.
My first trip this past summer was a five day trip around Shoshone Lake in Yellowstone National Park towards the end of July with my wife. I started out a little under the weather on this one, so the first two days were a slog. Starting on day three, I was beginning to feel better, and was close to a hundred percent by our last day.
Here are some shots of our trip.
Day 1 -
We stayed at Grant Village Campground the night before our trip
We began and ended at the DeLacy Creek Trailhead
Map of our route at the backcountry information sign near the trailhead.
We did our route counter clockwise around the lake
DeLacy Creek
The old Howard Eaton Trail - looks like they don't want you wondering off down it
I took plenty of breaks the first two days
The DeLacy Creek Meadows
Some monkshood along the trail to the lake
Lily pad covered DeLacy Creek as it enters Shoshone Lake
Made it to the lake
Our tent site at campsite 8S2
View of Shoshone Lake from our campsite, with Mount Sheridan in the distance
Day 2 -
Geraniums greet us on the morning of day two
A lot of forest hiking on day two. A footbridge near the cutoff to Pocket Lake
Back on the beach for a short distance
Some canoers enjoying the day
Making our way along the lake
View of the lake from campsite 8R5
A northwestern fritillary near the lake
Day 3 -
Cobwebbed covered junction sign
Making our way through the Shoshone Geyser Basin
Hot spring in the geyser basin
Thermal feature
Shoshone Creek makes its way through the basin
Taking a picture of a thermal feature
Thermal feature
This one was erupting (Union Geyser)
Hot spring
Making our way along the marshy west side of the lake
A fellow kilter! Picture worthy indeed.
Back on the lake, just before the climb to the top of the ridge
Making our way up the ridge
Our campsite on Moss Creek
Moss Creek
The meadows along Moss Creek
Day 4 -
A morning ford of Moss Creek
View of the lake through the trees
Marshy meadows below
Nearing the outlet of Shoshone Lake (the Lewis River)
Arriving at the outlet
Our tent site at campsite 8S1
The Outlet Patrol Cabin
Enjoying an evening on Shoshone Lake
Sunset on Shoshone Lake
Day 5 -
Looking north towards the DeLacy Creek inlet - where we are heading
Looking west, from the east side trail, towards the narrows of Shoshone Lake
More beach hiking
Almost back to the DeLacy Creek Trail
The Delacy Creek Trail
Back at the trailhead
The End.
