Will be in SF in a couple of weeks and thinking of hitting the park the weekend of March 11 and possibly doing an overnighter on the rim after ascending Snow Creek Trail. I have done this hike in May. Hoping for some local advice on the conditions of the rim this early.

With El Nino we've been unseasonably warm this winter but with Mother Nature you never know.

Well as you know it's south facing and all but how far you could get beyond the rim is likely very weather dependent even now. The conditions have trended warm as mentioned, the Tuolumne Meadows winter ranger report reflects that at higher elevations, but we'll see. One thing, AFAIK the park has closed the nice campsite with the Half Dome views due to a bear that has figured out that "bear resistant" canisters aren't "falling hundreds of feet onto granite" resistant canisters... and has been sending canisters over the cliff to smash and get goodies: and what with bears never really hibernating "winter" might not change that status. Best to give them a call both for how far out you can expect to get and what the status of that campsite is (it's got that wonderful view...). Probably more direct than a question on their FB page, sometimes they answer, sometimes they don't... www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tm.htmYou'll get a glimpse of the north rim on the High Sierra webcam www.nps.gov/yose/learn/photosmultimedia/webcams.htm

Thanks HSF! Figured you might come through. Crazy about the bear. I guess next we will be hanging canisters. ?

Gods I hope not, I was never all that fond of the entire rigamarole for getting a hang right. Especially the odd math of choosing and calculating a limb that would support the hang above the mom's claws even with the cub out on the branch while dipping sufficiently before the cub could reach the hang and claw or chew thorough the rope that the cub would get scared and back off.... etc. etc. etc. and in the dark.
If you get a response from the park about either the campsite or the behind rim conditions let us know okay?

I will. Right now I get no answer. It just keeps kicking me back to the main menu.
