I'm averaging 8 to 10 thousand steps a day when at work. I'm also averaging 1000 miles a year on the bicycle. Unfortunately, getting into a backpacking routine since finishing the Arizona Trail has eluded me.

11,000 steps is a lot. Upwards of 5 miles for me, if my iphone is at all accurate in counting steps (it’s not great, IMO, but it’s the only thing I have. Of course, it misses most of the around-the-house steps). Basically, this suggests to me that about 2 hourss/day of exercise is a good target. I’m going to believe that you can plug in weight lifting or swimming. Biking needs a different equation.

11,000 steps is a lot. Upwards of 5 miles... I think this is the issue for some. 11k steps would be about 2 hours of walking (maybe a little less). That is a lot of time dedicated to exercise everyday unless your job lends itself to getting this accomplished. However, that said exercise is a key component to keeping yourself healthy and alive longer so it comes to a balance. I myself have a routine that I've recently started that I do for 32 minutes 5 days a week. As I progress I see this probably getting to around 40 minutes and I think that is doable when it comes to time and long enough to make a difference in my health.

Once I became eligible for AARP membership, I found I needed to train in order to enjoy backpacking. Some years I do better than others. I am currently walking 5 miles on alternate days, with a 23# pack. On those other days I am climbing 1500 steps on a stairmaster machine, in about 45 minutes (including the 2 rest stops). It is handy that I retired early so I have time for this 2 hours of walking you speak of, but the last 2 jobs I was on before that, I was averaging 14 miles a day just walking the job and checking on the crew. I had to take an odometer to work to prove that to myself.
