Hi there!
My buddy and I have a reservation to do the Bishop Pass (South Lake) to Piute Pass (North Lake) route from Tuesday August 9 - Sunday August 14. We're going to be starting from Bishop Pass on Tuesday, and hoping to get going as early as possible. Ideally we'd like to end at the car, so that would mean parking at/near North Lake.
How can we get from North Lake to South Lake that first morning? Is the only option to walk or hitch? I emailed a park ranger and she said there used to be a shuttle but they stopped running it due to costs + low usage. The risk we run here is if we end up having to walk the whole thing (seems like 12 miles based on Google Maps) then that'll throw us off our route since we won't be able to hit the same mileage on Day 1 (then Day 2, 3,etc). So maybe then it makes more sense to park near South Lake and have to figure out the walk/hitch from North to South at the end?
Open to any suggestions/ideas/tips!
Thanks so much!
Michael

Check with the folk at Parchers (just below South Lake) and at Cardinal Village (just below North Lake). Once the young lady working Parchers (a few summers ago) gave my buddy and I a lift, once the owner of Cardinal Village introduced me to someone who gave me a lift. And of course once I walked it; and it is a long, hot road.
Not sure you'll be able to line something up this early, but they will have the most up to the minute knowledge of your options.

There’s a shuttle operated by the Eastern Sierra Transit Authority (a recent decision) who has a stop about 2 miles from the North Lake th: www.estransit.com/routes-schedule/community-routes/bishop-creek-shuttle/
Also if you want to utilize bear-and-marmot-free away-from-trailhead parking in Bishop, you can park in the field at the fairgrounds. They require check-in, a copy of your vehicle registration and a credit card authorization. The fee is $5.00 per night. Call 760-873-3588 extension 2 and ask for Marlo or Michelle for further info and to make arrangements.

Eastern Sierra Transit…had heard they might run the Bishop Creek shuttle so I looked this morning at their website and didn’t see it listed so referred to Parchers and Cardinal instead. This of course is the sure thing.

This of course is the sure thing. Given, as seen by the url, those links are directly off the ESTA website I’m not sure why there’d be an issue. ETA; Ah, then for an August route the OP has plenty of time for dust to settle. if you can check back or call them.

Just as a note, if the walk between the THs proves necessary, the trail up past the Tyee Lakes from Willows campground at least offers a more scenic way over to Sabrina Lake, and a shorter one. I’d still want to plan one more night to connect that loop.

This is all amazing -- thank you so much for the great ideas everyone! For the Bishop Creek Shuttle, it seems like it only goes clockwise: Bishop > South Lake > North Lake (well really Lake Sabrina) > Bishop. We actually need to go counterclockwise from North to South by shuttle (if we were to park at North but start hiking at South). I guess we could park in Bishop (at the fairgrounds, as High Sierra Fan suggested), take the shuttle to South to start the hike, end our hike at North but walk to Sabrina, and then catch the shuttle from Sabrina back to the car at Bishop. Would just need to make sure we don't miss a ride since there are only 2 per day! Will also keep an eye out on recreation.gov to see if we can flip the route and do it North to South (currently sold out), which would let us park at North, hike to South, and then catch the shuttle back to Sabrina and walk back to the car. rebeccad Just curious, what's the route to connect the loop (mileage, elevation)? Haven't seen too much about that online, most people seem to just be doing the almost-full loop.

I think we actually figured it out! We're going to drive the car to North Lake on Monday and then walk over to Lake Sabrina. Will catch the ~5pm shuttle to Bishop and sleep there for the night, then will take the shuttle on Tuesday morning to South Lake, then do the hike to North Lake and end at the car. Can't wait!!

rambleonrosenson, glad you figured out a workable plan! As for the questions about the route for connecting the loop, I don’t have my maps (I’m traveling), but I remember the Tyee lakes TH being maybe a mile down the road from South Lake, and it’s 9 miles over to Sabrina. I’m not sure from there if there’s trail (my dim memory says yes), but it would be another 6 or something, I’d guess.

Tyee Lakes trail connects to George Lake trail, which descends to the Sabrina Basin trail about a mile from the TH.

But what about Sabrina to North Lake? Yeah...that would be easiest just to walk down/up the road...use trail that connects dam area to North Lake road, though.
