So, I like wide brimmed hats. I have a few from the DPC, including one which I recently retired. I have a new one, made from 100% hemp that I really like. I like the modern cowboy hats, but the only issue is that the brims "taper" in the front (not sure of any better terms for it) whereas I'd rather have something uniform and wide on all fronts. I'd like something sort of like a sombrero, but that would just look silly, even for me. And as my grandmother always says: Beauty knows no pain. Unfortunately, I'm not very beautiful anyways.
Do y'all have any favorite hats? Baseball hats are okay, but often make my head itch. The trucker style is preferred in that regard. I like the wide brimmed and cloth/ felt. Ushankas are nice in the cold, but I find they often ride up on my eyebrow and sit a little bit too low. Any ways to fix this?
Anywho, hat's are amazing and super under appreciated, especially for hiking stuff, also considering that the main purpose of hat's is to protect from the outdoors, I'm surprised at how few people wear them.

Tilley hat for me, as evidenced in my avatar.

Tilley hat for me, as evidenced in my avatar. Got one of those myself. It's a good hat, however, the brims are usually too soft for my liking. I like a harder crown and brim. Though, the straps are a nice touch I find, because most modern wide brimmed hat's don't have those as a stylistic choice.

There's usually a reason why so many styles of anything are offered. Not everyone likes the same thing. That's good for those of us who like being out in the backcountry, away from crowds. Imagine if everyone who goes to the malls were out in our favorite haunts instead.
Along that line of thought, I've often wished there were only 3 choices of things like sofas. One person can't stand A, the other B, so C it is.

Billed baseball cap for me. Offers additional eye protection from alpine sun as well as some appreciated spacing off my eyes for a bug headnet in season.

Everything else falls under one of those categories. And in modern times, with wide brimmed hats becoming less common along with smaller brimmed hats, I just consider smaller brimmed hats to fall under wide brimmed hats. It's an oversimplification, but not by much.

We need BigLoad to post his hat collection. I think we can all agree on that.

I am not much on hats. I have all my hair. I do have hats for hiking. One OR rain hat and a OR sun hat.

Hats and socks are in the same category for me... I dislike them and only wear them when absolutely necessary. :D

It's a ball cap for me also for the same reasons as High Sierra Fan. I like the look of the hats that have a brim all the way around and I tried one once but the brim in the back just seems to get in the way of a lot of stuff. I'm not even sure where it is now, maybe I gave it away?

Longer hair + a hat = itchy and hot head. Hats are very comfortable if you have short hair. I guess that's why I mostly see hats on older gentlemen, especially the ones with shorter hair and/or not much hair and not so much on the younger generation, who mostly have longer hair.

Two of my college buddies are already gone too soon from melanoma. I leave as little as possible exposed. The Tilley LTM2, the widest brim they make is my sombrero of choice. This is my tintype from last Thursday having a meeting of the minds with one of the locals.

swiftdream I fall prey to the misgivings that a wide brimmed hat offers. As can be seen from your picture, at that time of day the brim does little good, allowing the sun to bake my face all too often. I've been tempted by the French Foreign Legion type hats, but have so far denied them.

As can be seen from your picture, at that time of day the brim does little good, allowing the sun to bake my face all too often. I've been tempted by the French Foreign Legion type hats, but have so far denied them. Oh, I’m aware of that. What you can’t see is the fact I’m wearing two buffs, one neckerchief style pulled up to almost the top of my head in back and the second worn on top sharain style that covers a lot too. Now what you see is shortly after sunrise and we are out into the mid day hours too. Even then what most people miss is the fact that a tremendous amount of rays ricochet up at you underneath your hat at mid day, all day. Intense damaging rays come right through the thickest cloud layers too. I’ve done some experiments with that too. Bottom line you do what you can and keep learning more. I think your French Foreign Legion idea is good. I have see a very wide brim Tilley that has that sun flap for the neck but have not looked lately to see if that is still offered. The flap tucked away too if you don’t want to use it at times.
