Took a header off my bike on Tuesday, which sent me to ER. I do not remember how I got from where I tumbled to back at the car, but the fellow I was riding with told me he checked me for damage immediately, and then helped me to my feet. I walked my own bike 1/4 mile back to the car, where we met up with my wife. I begin recalling this story as I was sitting on the curb at the car. No recollection of going over the handlebars, or walking back to the car.
ER ran Cat scans and found nothing to keep me. Put some steri strips in 2 places where a stitch or 2 might've worked as well. Gave me some wound dressings and a Rx for a pain reliever. Sent me home with instructions to take it easy for 2 weeks, as the concussion might cause abrupt mood changes.
I have scrapes on both of my palms, wrists, and knees. My left side of my face took most of the impact. It broke my dental plate, took out a dime sized chunk of skin on my upper lip (where my mustache may be forever affected), and loosened a tooth. Dentist today said the tooth will probably be OK, but we'll have to wait until I can open my mouth enough for an xray.
Soft foods, no getting my face wet, for 5 days. I'm enlisting my wife's help to wash my hair with the kitchen sprayer so I can keep my face dry. Those steri strips will come off by themselves in a few more days. In the meantime, I am supposed to chill. That might be the toughest assignment.

Ughh... that is no fun. I've been over the top of my handle bars on my mountain bike but I fared a little better than it sounds like you did. Does your helmet have a nasty scrape to tell the story?

Bike has no scrapes. Helmet has damage is several places, and now resides in the trash. It may have saved my nose or ear.

I’ve already told Zeke this, but any helmet that’s in a crash gets tossed. Manufacturer/certification people say after 6 years you can’t fully trust the plastics. Beware of dropping your helmet, as well—that can also cause micro-cracks that could lead to helmet failure. Zeke’s helmet apparently mostly did its job, because he’s still a functional human being.

Or as functional as I've ever been.

Heal quickly and fully, glad it wasn't worse, which it sounds like easily could have been.

JRinGeorgia You are a champ. thinking about others with your own health as it is. Thanks for the kind words. I'm healing up fairly quickly, for an old geezer.

Dr gave me permission to resume riding. No lasting effects from the concussion. I'm healing up quite nicely.

I am going to lose that tooth. Dentist took an X-ray today and pronounced the judgement. So, extraction next week and then a week of healing before he can take the impression for the new bridge. 3 weeks later I become a whole person again, with front teeth.

Don't know how I missed this, Zeke. I'm so glad you're mending. Things could have been much worse. You would have been a lot worse off without the helmet.
My worse crash was also self-induced. I was riding on the main bike route home. The route was being expanded and improved but still open for riding. I rode into a freshly poured cement curve that was partially buried with sand. It was at night and didn't see it. Long story short: A couple in a pickup who were driving behind me saw the crash. They scooped me up and drove me the last mile to the house. They actually stopped by the house the next morning to check on me. They said I was a bloody mess. I ended killing my two front teeth (both saved by the dentist doing some magic and root canals) and breaking my little finger. I always ride fast. Sometimes I pay for it. I've cracked three helmets in 40 years of cycling in Tucson. Always, always wear a helmet and get a new one after even the slightest bump.
