Excellent reminder, Ben. I recall last summer, returning from 5 weeks in Peru, how marvelous it was to turn on the tap and fill a glass and drink it. We had running water in the cities and towns, of course, but none we could safely drink. And hot showers were hit-or-miss even in the nicer hotels.
Backpacking does tend to make me appreciate things like indoor plumbing, too.

Running water, indoor flush toilets and electricity all amaze me.
I also think the average American's spice rack would have been worth a king's ransom in the middle ages.
And the price we pay for gasoline (which we complain about) is less per gallon than the price we pay for bottled water.

The U.S. is pretty expensive according to many American ex-pats interviewees on Huff Post live. Something about having 35 different cheeseburgers within a 3 block radius.
