I'm planning a trip in August for a group of relatively inexperienced backpackers, and I am really looking at the Smith Lake Basin. I think it's a great combo of shorter distance, scenery, and the chance to catch some decent fish. I would love anyone's input on the area, especially those of you who have fished the lakes in the area! The group I'm taking hasn't really been backpacking, and I'm trying to get them hooked! From my research it seems that all of the lakes have brooke trout, and a few have lakers. I have read that there might be habituated black bears in the area, and access into Dickinson Park may require the purchase of a 'trespass' permit (any info on this would be greatly appreciated!). I've read most everything posted about the Winds (too bad the old site is down, that was a gold mine!), and I have a few trips under my belt for still being in my 20s (Grave Lake area a few times, Titcomb Basin, Junction Lake via Fayette Lake, and rafting up the lake chain into Ross Lake). Any input from those of you who have been there would be greatly appreciated!

It's "OK". It's a very short, easy hike for very average sized Brookies. The scenery is excellent, however the extremely long drive up from Lander makes me hesitant to recommend it. If you're looking for something similar, with a plethora of lakes and an equally easy access from Worthen Meadows, check out the Stough Creek Basin just to the south.
