I’m considering replacing my warmest/heaviest down jacket, a ten year old Eddie Bauer/First Ascent Peak XV. I normally wear size men’s XL.
Possible replacements are the Valandre Troll or Immelman G2, most likely the former. Valandre’s size chart says a men’s XL is a 55 in EU sizing, but some conversion charts i have looked at say that converts to a 44/45 in US sizing, a little small for men’s XL.
Further complicating matters: one site that sells the brand says there is no need to size up. Valandre, when i contacted the company (via their info line email) recommended sizing down because the jacket is cut large. Finally, i have found this can be very dependent on the brand and the jacket. I have a RAB mens down jacket, mid-weight, that says it’s EU size 58 and XL in US sizing; it’s a good fit for me. I have another RAB shell that i had to size up to XXL to get the right fit.
Does anyone have experience wearing a Valandre jacket, either the ones I’m looking at or some older model? I’m looking for a general sense of whether this company’s jackets run small, true to size, or large.
Thanks!

Brief follow up: I ended up consulting with the manufacturer and determining that it would be prudent to order their heavier jackets true to size. I ended up with a Troll jacket in XL. The fit is good with a base layer and light-ish mid-layer. Layering it over a sturdy shell during a longer stop on a winter climb, it might be a little confining. definitely not oversized.
Other than that, Valandre is definitely a brand worth looking at. The jacket's build quality, the loft of the down, the articulation of the sleeves and shoulders, and its general warmth vs. weight are outstanding.
